Abuja Court Stops PDP Convention in Ibadan

Introduction to the Court Ruling

Justice Peter Odo Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a final order stopping the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from proceeding with its 2025 National convention scheduled for Ibadan, in Oyo State. The convention is scheduled to take place between November 15 and 16 for the purpose of electing national officers for the PDP.

Background to the Case

However, Justice Peter Odo Lifu, in his final judgement on Friday afternoon, in a suit filed by former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido, barred PDP from proceeding with the convention until it complies with its Constitution and Guidelines on the convention. He ordered that the Ibadan convention be put on hold until Sule Lamido is allowed to purchase a nomination form for the office of National Chairman.

Court Orders and Implications

The Judge prohibited the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from supervising, monitoring or aiding the Ibadan convention until the former Jigawa State governor is allowed to participate in the convention. The Judge held that PDP is under strict obligation to adhere to its own rules and regulations by giving opportunities to eligible members to realise their aspirations. He said that it was wrong of the PDP to have denied Lamido the opportunity to purchase nomination form for the office of the national chairman of the party.

Analysis of the Ruling

The ruling highlights the importance of adherence to party constitution and guidelines in the conduct of party affairs. It also underscores the need for fairness and equal opportunity for all eligible members to participate in party elections. The court’s decision is a significant development in the lead-up to the PDP national convention and may have implications for the party’s internal dynamics and the overall electoral process.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the court ruling has halted the PDP’s national convention, citing the need for the party to comply with its constitution and guidelines. The decision has significant implications for the party and its members, and it remains to be seen how the party will respond to the ruling. The ruling is a reminder of the importance of adherence to rules and regulations in the conduct of party affairs and the need for fairness and equal opportunity for all eligible members.
