Anambra guber: All 21 councils unite behind Soludo

Introduction to Anambra State Politics

The entire political architecture of Anambra State and the 21 local councils have declared support for Governor Charles Soludo as the sole candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for the forthcoming November 8, 2025, gubernatorial election in the state. This underscores a rare show of unity and political maturity by APGA, as the party’s convention, held in a charged but peaceful atmosphere, recorded 3,260 accredited delegates, out of which 3,175 cast their votes.

APGA Convention Outcome

All 3,168 valid votes, with only four invalid entries, went to Soludo which shows a clean sweep demonstrating the confidence reposed in his leadership. According to the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, the Chairman of the electoral committee, Nwaegbo Uche, officially declared Soludo returned as the party’s candidate, citing the unprecedented support across the board.

Labour Party Crisis

Meanwhile, the Labour Party (LP) candidate for the November 8, 2025, gubernatorial poll in Anambra State, Dr. George Muoghalu, has dismissed insinuations in some quarters that the purported leadership crisis in the national headquarters of the party will negatively impact his electoral fortunes. Recall that barely 24 hours after the Supreme Court quashed the Court of Appeal ruling that declared Mr. Julius Abure as the authentic National Chairman of LP, Moughalu, a former Managing Director of Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), emerged as the standard bearer of the party for the governorship election in Anambra.

Background to the Crisis

The party went into two factions when its presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential poll, Mr. Peter Obi, joined the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, alongside other stakeholders, to set up a national caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi Esther Usman. While the stakeholders founded the caretaker committee citing the expired tenure of its former National Chairman, Abure, the embattled chairman rebuffed them and rather orchestrated a controversial convention in Nnewi to perpetuate himself in office for a second term.

Court Rulings and Implications

Abure’s brinkmanship paid off when the Court of Appeal, Abuja division, upheld his election into office for a second term and pronounced him as duly elected, even as the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee appealed against the judgment at the nation’s apex court. Last Friday, the apex court, which is Nigeria’s court of last instance, set aside the Court of Appeal ruling, stressing that the appellate court lacked jurisdiction to determine the matter. The Supreme Court also declared that the leadership of every political party is the internal business of the members, even as the court enjoined politicians to learn to vacate elective offices when their mandate runs its full course.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while the APGA has shown a united front with the unanimous election of Governor Charles Soludo as its candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial election, the Labour Party is navigating through internal crises. However, Dr. George Muoghalu, the LP candidate, remains optimistic about his electoral chances despite the party’s leadership issues.
