Council Partners Governors on Journalism and Governance

Introduction to NPC and NGF Partnership

Nigerian Press Council (NPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting strategic partnerships that will enhance ethical journalism and good governance in the country. The Executive Secretary of NPC, Dr Dili Ezughah, said this when he paid a courtesy visit to the Director-General of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Dr Abdulateef Shittu, in Abuja.

Purpose of the Visit

Ezughah, who expressed appreciation for the warm reception, lauded the forum’s openness to collaboration, describing it as a demonstration of forward-thinking leadership. “Our mission today is to formalise a strategic partnership between the Nigerian Press Council and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, present the NPC Strategic Partner Plaque, and discuss areas of mutual collaboration,” Ezughah said.

Role of NPC in Promoting Ethical Journalism

He said that the council, established by law to maintain high professional, ethical standards in the Nigerian press had played a pivotal role in promoting accurate and responsible journalism, especially in an era dominated by digital information flow. Ezughah identified four key areas of proposed collaboration between the NPC and NGF for support on the council’s upcoming publication titled ‘Nigeria – Documenting the Economy and Tourism Profile of the States and the Federal Capital Territory’.

Proposed Collaboration

The book, he said, would highlight the economic and tourism potential of each state, serving as a vital resource for investors and the public. Ezughah, who solicited for book endorsement from the Chairman of the NGF, said the NGF’s endorsement would add credibility to the publication and demonstrate state governments’ support for transparent communication.

Combating Fake News

Speaking on combating fake news, Ezughah called for collaboration on deploying advanced technology to detect and combat fake news, disinformation and misinformation. He added that the initiative would safeguard media organisations and public institutions alike. “The council believes that through this partnership, we can build a media environment that supports ethical standards and contributes to national development,” he said.

Response from NGF

Responding, Shittu expressed the forum’s readiness to collaborate with the NPC management team, saying that such synergy was a symbolic call in furtherance of national development. “The NGF is a policy hub and resource centre for the states. We welcome this collaboration with the NPC, as it aligns with our strategic objectives at the NGF Secretariat,” he stated.

Conclusion

The partnership between NPC and NGF is a step in the right direction towards promoting ethical journalism and good governance in Nigeria. The collaboration will not only enhance the credibility of the media but also contribute to national development. With the rising incidents of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation, this partnership is crucial in sanitising the media space and projecting a positive image of the country.
