Kwankwaso Open to Discussions But Not Leaving NNPP

Introduction to the 2027 General Elections

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, various political parties and stakeholders are making moves to position themselves for the upcoming polls. The 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared that he has no plans to leave the party, though he remains open to discussions with other political stakeholders.

Kwankwaso’s Position on Defection

Kwankwaso, who spoke in Abuja during the ninth National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the NNPP, dismissed speculations about his possible defection. He stated that the meeting was not intended to announce his decision to stay in or leave the NNPP, but rather to reaffirm the party’s position and openness to alliances. Kwankwaso emphasized that the NNPP belongs to Nigerians and not a few individuals, adding that while the party is not in a hurry, it remains flexible and open to dialogue.

NNPP’s Presidential Candidate for 2027

Earlier in his welcome address, the NNPP National Chairman, Dr Ajuji Ahmed, reaffirmed Kwankwaso as the party’s presidential candidate for 2027. He said the party had positioned itself as the “beautiful bride” of Nigerian politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that citizens have already made a decision on the direction of the country. The party emphasized that while it continues to attract new members, those who decide to leave cannot be compelled to remain.

Support for Kwankwaso’s Leadership

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, who was represented by his deputy, Aminu Gwarzo, pledged support for Kwankwaso’s leadership, noting his contributions to strengthening the NNPP. This move is seen as a significant boost to Kwankwaso’s candidacy and the NNPP’s chances in the 2027 elections.

PDP’s Strategy for the 2027 Elections

Meanwhile, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not repeat what he described as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’s “mistake” of fielding a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in the 2027 elections. The governor, while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Tonight, dismissed the narrative about a possible Seyi Makinde/Bala Mohammed pairing for the PDP, insisting that the party has not settled on any candidate.

PDP’s Presidential Ticket

Mohammed emphasized that the PDP needs a Christian from the South to emerge as the presidential candidate, who will then pick a majority Muslim vice president in the North. This strategy is seen as an attempt to balance the party’s ticket and appeal to a broader range of voters.

Conclusion

As the 2027 general elections approach, political parties and stakeholders are making strategic moves to position themselves for success. The NNPP has reaffirmed Kwankwaso as its presidential candidate, while the PDP is taking a cautious approach to avoid repeating the APC’s perceived mistake of fielding a Muslim-Muslim ticket. The outcome of these elections will depend on various factors, including the parties’ strategies, candidate selection, and voter turnout.
