We’re intact for Peter Obi in 2027, says Obidient Movement

Introduction to the Obidient Movement’s Stance

The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has declared that the group remains united and committed to supporting the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, in the 2027 general elections—regardless of the political platform he chooses. Tanko made the clarification in Abuja following speculations that the movement had become divided along party lines, particularly after former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, announced his intention to contest the 2027 polls on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The Movement’s Loyalty and Commitment

Obi, who is yet to make a clear declaration on his political future, has been linked with a possible return to the PDP, continued membership of the Labour Party, or even a move to the ADC. Speaking on behalf of the movement, Tanko stressed that the Obidient Movement’s loyalty is to Obi and his vision, not to any particular political party. “Democracy guarantees freedoms, including association and choices about election participation,” he said. “Anybody who wants to contest an election is free to do so. Atiku Abubakar has the right to contest on any platform, just like any other person. Nobody can deny him that right.”

Unity and Indivisibility of the Movement

“But what we have resolved as a movement, with followers across the country and beyond, is that we will stand with our presidential candidate anywhere he goes. We are together and indivisible. The vision is the same, the agenda is the same, and we will stand firmly with Mr Obi anywhere he goes. We believe in his ideas and we will not abandon him.” Tanko described political parties as mere vehicles in democracy, noting that the Obidient Movement’s support for Obi transcends party affiliation.

Call for Internal Democracy and Credible Elections

He also urged political parties to strengthen internal democracy and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee free, fair, and credible elections in 2027. According to him, “the minimum expectation of Nigerians is a credible electoral process that truly reflects the people’s wishes and consolidates Nigeria’s standing as the giant of Africa.”

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Obidient Movement has reaffirmed its commitment to Peter Obi, emphasizing that its loyalty is to him and his vision, rather than to any specific political party. The movement’s stance highlights the importance of unity and indivisibility in supporting a candidate who shares their agenda and vision for the country. As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, the Obidient Movement’s declaration serves as a reminder of the need for credible electoral processes and the strengthening of internal democracy within political parties.
